The Washington School Heritage Foundation was formed in 2023 with the mission of preserving the history and site of the Booker T. Washington School in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The heritage of Washington School is a critical part of the larger narrative of African American education in the local, regional, and national context. Our goal is to preserve and transform the original school site into a living monument, to educate current and future generations and to serve all people.
The Booker T. Washington School, located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was constructed in 1938, and became known as 'Washington School'. As one of only two schools accepting African American students before 1956, it is the only remaining example of an African American high school in Payne County.
