How you can help

Minority Serving Community Schools

Minority Serving Community Schools

The stories of minority serving community schools like Stillwater’s Booker T. Washington School, and hundreds of schools like it, are stories of dreams, vision, perseverance and tenacity that echo through American society and history.

Minority serving schools in Oklahoma have served Native Americans, African Americans,  immigrant communities still grasping English, and others.

“Washington School”, as the locals call it, has historically been the center of Stillwater, Oklahoma’s African American community since the early 1900s.

After desegregation, the complex served the general community and school system for decades.

The heart of the school complex is the 1938 building pictured above. The school complex was abandoned and neglected for decades, but it has good, strong bones and studies confirm that it is worth rebuilding. And there is a strong desire within the community to bring it back to service.

The Washington School Heritage Foundation is working with the community and the City of Stillwater to redevelop the school building and its environs into an attractive community serving space that honors the heritage of the school, shares Stillwater’s African American community experience and history, and contributes to the offerings of the developing 12th Avenue Health corridor.

A Unique Opportunity

A Unique Opportunity

Washington School is considered the last publicly owned, historically African American school structure in the region. It provides a unique opportunity to tell the story of minority serving schools, both in the context of Stillwater and the region.

With robust planning and fundraising, together we can develop a very special place for Stillwater, Oklahoma and the region.
